What are Hospice-Veteran Partnerships?

Hospice-Veteran Partnerships (HVP) are coalitions of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities, community hospices, State Hospice Organizations, and others working together to ensure that excellent care at the end of life is available for our nation’s Veterans and their families. These coalitions may be community-based or statewide and may function independently or within an existing structure. HVP is a national program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospice and Palliative Care Initiative.

What is HVPI?

The Hospice Veteran Partnership of Indiana (HVPI) strives to always be improving end-of-life care for Veterans and their families living in and around Indiana. We believe all Veterans should receive high quality hospice and palliative care provided by VA and/or community agencies that understand the unique needs of Veterans and their families.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to establish an enduring network of local hospice agencies, VA professionals, volunteers, and other interested organizations working together to provide excellent care for Indiana Veterans or Veterans living within Veteran Health Indiana service areas through the end of life, whether they are living in private homes or other healthcare settings.

Why are the needs of veterans at end of life different from any one else?

As human beings, we share some common experiences as death approaches. However, veterans may have even more complex needs, especially combat soldiers and POWs who have faced the grim realities of death in a very dramatic way. Veterans may also be coping with unresolved grief or survivor guilt having witnessed traumatic deaths and injuries that may color how they come to terms with their own death.
